A few notes from Mom & Dad

Tara Timms is a 17 year old rodeo cowgirl from Leedey, Oklahoma.  Tara is not average, when it comes to horses and rodeo, she has a very strong work ethic and drive to win.  In rodeo, as with any other sport, winning is not easy and doesn't come without a price.  For those of you who know Tara, you know that she is not afraid to pay the price.  Sometimes she wins, but win or lose, it's the rodeo life that Tara enjoys so much, seeing and competing with her rodeo friends.

Tara has two sisters Kara, age 15, and Ciara, age 13. They also love to ride and rodeo with Tara. Tara and her sisters all began riding around the age of 5 or 6. Cousins Ky and Kyra Stierwalt of Leedey also began  riding about the same time. Kirk Stierwalt ( Ky and Kyra's dad) and Edward Timms ( Tara, Kara, and Ciara's dad) both tried to avoid the sport of rodeo, but the Mom's, Joni Timms and Juli Stierwalt, were basically , "Full Speed Ahead". For our family the start began at Joe and Walter Merrick's Rough Riders Winter Series of rodeos at Sayre, Oklahoma in 1996 and 1997.

When discussing an early horse purchase I said to my wife , "Joni, I don't want to rodeo, it is expensive and we don't have the money. To which she replied, "We are not going to rodeo, all we are going to do is go to a play day once in a while." The rest as they say is history. ( it seems like we haven't missed one since)

Tara's first really  good horse was a pole and barrel horse named, " Ross's Bandit". This was a hard running palomino that had already won the Palomino world pole championship several times. This horse and several others lead the charge which began in the Mid South Youth Rodeo Association called the MRCA. The MRCA association is a 20 rodeo series in and around Ardmore, Oklahoma. The 3 day finals are located in the Hardy Murphy Coliseum in Ardmore. ( See the accomplishments page of this web site). As with any rodeo family many mistakes were made for each good thing that happened. For the next several years, we made a lot of miles to associations and one day saddle events to try to improve the skills of Tara, and her sisters and cousins. These included: The  JRCA of Elk City Ok., The Rockin H Winter Series of Leedey, Ok.  The NBHA, the OBRA, and many others.

In 1998, with the families growing support for the kids and their rodeos and with the help of their grand parents Lomas and Donald Harrel, we built an indoor practice and event arena in Leedey, called the Rockin H Arena.  This proved to be a valuable asset in the practice and development of rodeo skills in the Timms and Stierwalt kids.

Currently the Rockin H is being used for practice as well as youth and high school rodeos, Jack pot barrel races, and other events. One of the highlights for this arena is Lomas' Kitchen which has proven to be the best concession stand in the area. For many the highlight of the trip to the Rockin H is the home made pies in Lomas' Kitchen.

To date Tara has been featured on the TV News program , " Is this a great state or what". She has won 41 saddles  and numerous buckles and other awards. The sisters have won three saddles each. Not bad for a 17  year old student from Leedey, Oklahoma. Tara, like many other young girls in rodeo, has  high expectations with the goal to go and possibly win the barrels at the NFR. But until then we have a few more rodeos to go to. As a family we hope you enjoy this web site. We have developed this site to make it easier for you to keep track of Tara and her friends. We will try to up date this site as often as possible, we look forward to seeing you on the road.

Advice to the beginners: Join a good association, look to successful riders for advice, subscribe to a good local rodeo paper such as the "Cowboy Times" or the "Cowboy Sports News" for event schedules. Remember a young horse is usually pretty but not always what you need; don't be afraid to ask for help before you get discouraged. Good Luck!!!!! Edward, Joni,  Tara, Kara and Ciara.
